2020 mass mobilisations in Mauritius

Juin 2020
Kolektif Konversasion Solider (collectif de conversation solidaire)
Premier rendez-vous post premier confinement sanitaire à Maurice. Juin 2020 où plus de 300 délégués de syndicats, d’ONG, de mouvements sociaux et d’organisations de gauche se sont réunis pour décider de la mobilisation en raison de la réglementation régressive des droits des travailleurs et de la capture des fonds publics des élites dirigeantes.

June 2020
Kolektif Konversasion Solider (solidarity conversation collective)
First meeting post first sanitary lockdown in Mauritius. June 2020 where over 300 delegates from trade unions, NGOs, social movements, left organisations met to decide of mobilisation due to regressive workers-rights regulation and public funds capture of ruling elites.

Juillet 2020
Première mobilisation à Port-Louis avec quelque 10 000 manifestants pour s’opposer aux mesures liberticides et anti-droits des travailleurs à Maurice. La manifestation a été appelée par le Kolektif Konversasion Solider.

July 2020
First mobilisation in Port-Louis with some 10,000 demonstrators to oppose liberticide and anti-workers rights measures in Mauritius. The demonstration was called by the Kolektif Konversasion Solider.

August 2020 – Wakashio mobilisation
The Wakashio wrecked on the 25th July 2020 in Mauritius and oil started pouring out of the ship after 12 days of inaction by the State of Mauritius. The firsts to be on spot for artisanal booms confection included CARES activists. This was to become a mass movement where several thousands of people got involved for over two weeks.

Août 2020 – Mobilisation Wakashio
Le Wakashio a fait naufrage le 25 juillet 2020 à Maurice et du pétrole a commencé à sortir du navire après 12 jours d’inaction de l’État mauricien. Les premiers à être sur place pour la confection artisanale de booms comprenaient des militants de CARES. Cela allait devenir un mouvement de masse où plusieurs milliers de personnes se sont impliquées pendant plus de deux semaines.

29 août 2020
Marche inédite à Maurice où plus de cent milles manifestants sont dans les rues de Port-Louis. La manifestation est appelée par l’activiste Bruneau Laurette avec le soutien actif du Kolektif Konversasion Solider (dont CARES est un composant).

August 29, 2020
Unprecedented march in Mauritius where more than a hundred thousand demonstrators are in the streets of Port-Louis. The protest is called by activist Bruneau Laurette with the active support of the Kolektif Konversasion Solider (of which CARES is a component).

Septembre 2020
Manifestation réunissant une foule de quelque cent mille personnes dans les rues de Mahébourg, non loin de l’échouage du vraquier Wakashio. Cette mobilisation est organisée par la coalition dont CARES fait partie.

Demonstration bringing together a crowd of some one hundred thousand people in the streets of Mahébourg, not far from the grounding of the bulk carrier Wakashio. This mobilization is organized by the coalition of which CARES is part.

Depuis le début en 2014 du mouvement populaire d’opposition au projet d’exploitation d’ilménite Toliara Sands, re-nommé Base Toliara en 2017, l’Association MA.ZOTO. des représentants des communautés affectées par ce projet et ses partenaires du CRAAD-OI et du Collectif pour la défense des terres malgaches TANY n’ont cessé d’appeler les autorités étatiques à arrêter les activités de ce projet minier australien.
